June Scoop at Skin Solutions Dermatology!

Welcome Dr. Belaidi to Nashville & Hendersonville!

We are so excited to have Dr. Marisa Belaidi join our wonderful team of medical providers this August!

Dr. Belaidi, originally from New York, moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University and has lived there for the past 13 years.  She loves people and problem solving, which makes her career choice an excellent fit for her, as she is able to address and resolve skin issues that seem insurmountable to her patients!  We asked Dr. Belaidi a few questions to help you get to know her a little better before her arrival – here is what we found out...

Dr. Belaidi loves to spend her spare time with her husband, and two dogs, Ruby and Barry.  She also loves running, playing tennis, and home renovation!  Thanksgiving is Marisa's favorite holiday - "quality time with the whole family plus delicious food – what could be better?!”  When asked what song she would sing at Karaoke night, Dr. Belaidi said “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, or “Waterloo” by ABBA, which we would like to second as excellent choices!

We hope you are as excited as we are to have Marisa join the Skin Solutions Dermatology team!  We are now booking appointments for Dr. Belaidi in our
Nashville and Hendersonville locations - click below to contact us and get your appointment scheduled!

Provider Spotlight: Dr. Julie Pena

Learn more about our fearless leader, Dr. Julie Pena, in our Q&A below!

Dr. Julie Pena, Skin Solutions Dermatology

What attracted you to work in the field of dermatology?

"After finishing medical school, I became a pathologist.  During my pathology training, I enjoyed diagnosing skin diseases under the microscope.  I found myself wondering what the clinician saw on the patient’s skin.  I attended dermatology clinics and conferences and found that I loved patients!  As a pathologist, I had no patient exposure.  Also, I felt well equipped with information since I was able to look at the lesions or rashes on patients’ skin and then look at the cells creating the issue under the microscope.   Combining what I saw in clinic with what I saw under the microscope to formulate a diagnosis was empowering.   Once I transitioned from pathology to dermatology, I was introduced to surgery.  I love surgery because it requires precision.  I get great pleasure from being precise so surgery and me are a fit.   My favorite part of surgery though is the extended conversations I have with my patients during surgery.  I get to know them beyond their skin issues.  I hear about their life, their family, their interests, and their passions.  People fascinate me and to hear their stories is humbling.  My daughter recently taught me about a “new” word called sonder.  Sonder is the realization that every person is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.  My patients have taught me everyone has an interesting story deserving of a book or movie.  I love that I hear their stories and that I can play a small part in their lives."

Where Are You Originally From?

"I grew up in a town of 2,000 people.  It is called Dundee, Michigan.  It has doubled in size since I was a kid.  After I left for college, Cabela’s came to town and opened one of their biggest stores making Dundee a destination for visitors.  Now when I say I am from Dundee Michigan, people say, “Oh, I know Dundee…home to Cabela’s!”  It is kind of nice that people have heard of my small hometown."

How Do You Like To Spend Your Spare Time?

"When I am not at work, my life is consumed by my family and pets.  I have a great husband who has supported me throughout my career.  We have four children who we love dearly and we all have a lot of fun together.  We also care for my father who is 90.   We had five dogs but recently lost our sweetest and eldest, Daisy, who was 18.  Our youngest dog is a Belgian Tervuren and if you take a moment to read about these dogs you will understand why so much of my time goes into caring for our dogs."

What is your number one recommendation for people wanting to maintain healthy skin?

"A zinc sunscreen moisturizer every morning (look for at least 6% zinc) and a retinol every night."

Do you have a favorite product?  If yes, why?

"My two favorite products, I developed.  Honestly, when I developed them, I was thinking of myself.  Can you believe as a high school grad I was voted “Class Beach Bum” because I loved the beach so much?  During my pathology and dermatology training I realized where my skin was headed after all that sun damage so I wanted to do my best to reverse and preserve what I could.  I used all the knowledge I gained in medical school, pathology residency and dermatology residency to develop these two anti-aging products that could be purchased without a prescription and be used on most skin types yet had ingredients that were strong and worked.  I am proud of these products because people are always complementing me on my skin.  I never dreamed that would be something I would experience in my 50's.  The two products are Likewise Age-Defying Wrinkle Smoother and Likewise Youthful Eye Complex.   Both contain an effective/high concentration of Retinol."

What is your favorite thing about working at Skin Solutions Dermatology?

"I work at all of the Skin Solutions Dermatology locations throughout Middle Tennessee.  I meet people from all walks of life.  My patients and my co-workers have introduced me to ideas, concepts, and lifestyles that have broadened my knowledge and tolerance.  I am grateful to have the opportunity to care for people from various races, ethnicities and classes and I appreciate the things I learn from them.  I am also thankful every day for all my terrific co-workers, who seem to always come to work with a good attitude, ready to deliver high quality care to our patients."
